Sarah Jo Pender, a woman who has been in solitary for five years for a nonviolent prison escape, had seen dozens of women come and go from solitary and explained some of the ones she had witnessed. She states: Other women who enter sane will become so depressed that they shut down or hurt themselves. She watched a woman claw chunks of flesh from her cheeks and nose and write on the window with her blood.
