Soha Alam Mr. Schmidt English 9 Honors 3 April, 2024 The Creature/Predator Archetype Over Time We have all been scared of the monster under our bed. For years I was scared that there would be some freaky giant or scary monster of any sort after me. I look back on the nights that I was scared, but now I think it’s just silly. However, isn’t it strange that every kid has had this experience, like something is out to get them? Well, maybe they’re right. Every step we take, there is someone or something that wants to stop us. Some people in stories have real monsters, like Polyphemus from the Odyssey. As these boys meet up, they try to build a life for themselves without adults to guide them, and it becomes apparent that they are completely different people than they once were. As a tribe, they started exploring the land they were on, and they needed to go through the woods. Simon, a 6 year old boy, volunteers. Once the boy comes out after being gone way longer than he was supposed to, he is ambushed by the rest of the boys, thinking that he was the beast. This ambush was described as, “The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over his face. It was crying out against the abominable noise, something about a body on the hill. The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements, but the tearing of teeth and claws,” (Golding, 152-153). This quote describes the horrific death of Simon, who they believed was a monster. This brutal death of Simon, regardless of whether they knew it was him or not, shows how much these boys have
